Tourettes is playing his last show ever in New Zealand for at least a while as he gears up for his move to live in Australia with his half-cousin Louie Knuxx.

He’ll be supported by top talent like the Drabb Do Riffs, The Usual Suspects and Jay Roahcer whilst himself delivering a super special set.

The show is on the 24th of April at Whammy Bar, K-Road, Auckland.

Tyson Tyler To Leave Breakin Wreckwordz

Over the last couple of months, Tyson Tyler and I have spent considerable time assessing our individual goals, the vision for Breakin Wreckwordz, and strategizing the best way to go about achieving those goals. It has become apparent to both of us that the path of Breakin Wreck as an entity and that of Tyson as an artist are not aligned. In a nutshell, Tyson wishes to make a career from his music, and Breakin Wreckwordz is not a profit focused organization.

As a solution to this, we have mutually decided the best solution is for Tyson to take a route independent from the label. And so, from this day forward, Tyson’s music will be released thru Tyson Tyler Music. There is absolutely no bad blood between Tyson and myself or any other member of the Breakin Wreck collective. This was simply a case of Tyson’s evolution into a genre Breakin Wreckwordz doesn’t cater for.

The first official release from the interim label will be a video single featuring Dei Hamo and produced by Yorel titled “Body Guard”. Stay tuned to www.tysontyler.com for updates.

To Be Wreck

Near a decade ago, when myself and Dom (Tourettes) conceptualized Breakin Wreckwordz, the underground was thriving, the days of everyone rapping like Bone Thugs and Tupac had passed, and most had, to some degree, their own style. I wanted Breakin Wreck to be a label that championed the artist, giving full creative control from sound and direction, right thru to artwork and presentation, with the only real ‘rule’ was that we wouldn’t put out music referencing guns unrealistically like was so popular amongst our American influenced counterparts at the time.

Over the next 5 years I made a concerted effort to sign artists that covered as bigger spectrum of hip hop music as possible. And with the boom of commercial interest in hip hop, accompanied by every musicians dream of living off music revenue, I even went as far as militantly trying to avoid the tag of ‘underground’ being associated with our label.

When Pooja started working for me in 1996 she constantly tried to tell me of the importance of defining our style or what we stood for, to which I often replied that “our style was hip hop and we represent all factions of the music”. Recent reflection of what actually motivates me to keep doing this would indicate that my response was ignorant at best. We we’re losing direction.

Trends such as the ‘sped up vocal’, the ‘chop and screwed hook’ and the ‘auto tune effect’ have saturated the market to the point it appears being a follower is a pre-requisite for commercial success in hip hop. Radio stations that flout themselves as ‘hip hop and Rnb’ should really be using the slogan ‘pop that’s not rock’. Forget the term ‘internet emcee’; the only real hip hop is spread digitally now.

As I have spoken about in the last few newsletters, our direction is very clear to me now. I am not motivated by bright lights and dollar signs. The time and passion I invest into Breakin Wreck is fuelled purely by creativity and message. Artists seeking more conventional mainstream exposure are effectively wasting their time on our roster, as no matter what becomes of the mainstream, we will always be positioned to the left of it. That’s what Breakin Wreck is about.

Leaders of the new school Home Brew are doing this big fund raising gig to raise money for a video directed by Cris Graham. "Fandards"

Facebook Fan Request

First things first, I like having fans, but I have standards too; fan standards. You see, if you’re a good fan, I’ll treat you with the respect you deserve. I’ll happily engage in conversation with you. I might even invite you to train with me. Maybe we can even hang out. That is of course if you meet my fan standards, or as I like to call it “fandards”.

You see, I’m sick of the old model of fan to artist relationships. With mediums of old like the television and radio, artists had almost no control over who their fans were. Musicians like Dave Dobbyn, Black Flag and Joy Division got lumped with bigoted arseholes for fans, effectively repelling people that may have actually shared values with the artists on a more sincere level.

I remember despising Nirvana and Pearl Jam when I was young solely because I disliked their fans. It wasn’t until many years later I actually took the time to listen to some of their music and form an opinion not driven by bad fans. Sure they do suck, but that’s not the point.

Then you’ve got Tourettes’ fans. Sure, they are educated, witty, and often talented, but going to a Tourettes gig is like burying your head in the dirty washing pile and breathing deeply through your nose. I feel bad saying that because I’m friends with a lot of his fans, but if you all just took your weekly shower the night of his gigs it would be a lot more pleasurable for the rest of us that made the effort.

See, what I’m looking for in a fan isn’t a “yes” man. I don’t want your money. I don’t expect you to promote me I don’t want you to blindly follow me without question like I’m some sort of demigod. I want honest fans, but that’s not all. You also have to be knowledgeable, learned, willing to learn, political, left leaning (extreme left is also accepted), and most importantly, you can’t also be a fan of someone who is really wack.

In fact, I am willing to compromise. You can be a fan of one wack artist. We all have our one artist we are fans of for reasons to strange for other people to understand. But if you’re a fan of every hip hop artist to come out of New Zealand, or every rapper that’s white, or every rapper that has worked the battle scene, etc, then you can’t also be my fan. I don’t want you.

I’m not real picky. We don’t have to be the same. Your age, colour, sex, wealth, and location bare no standing on my assessment of your ability to be my fan. But I do have standards; fan standards; fandards.
